Jeremy Corbyn

Background

Jeremy Corbyn is a British politician who has been a fixture of UK politics for over four decades. Born in 1949 in Chippenham, Wiltshire, Corbyn comes from a family of left-wing activists - his parents met during the Spanish Civil War. He had a comfortable upbringing in a sprawling manor home in a Tory-voting village, but from a young age was drawn to socialist and anti-war causes. Corbyn was elected to the Islington local council at age 25 and soon after began working for the National Union of Public Employees. He was elected to Parliament in 1983, representing the safe Labour seat of Islington North, a working-class area close to central London. Over the next three decades, Corbyn established himself as a fixture on the Labour Party's left wing, rebelling against his party's leadership on numerous occasions. In 2015, Corbyn unexpectedly won the Labour leadership election, riding a wave of grassroots enthusiasm for his democratic socialist platform. As Labour leader from 2015-2020, Corbyn pushed the party sharply to the left, advocating for policies like renationalization of key industries, a green new deal, and an end to Britain's involvement in foreign wars. However, his tenure was also marred by allegations of antisemitism within the party, which culminated in an Equality and Human Rights Commission report finding unlawful discrimination. After being expelled from the Labour Party in 2020, Corbyn co-founded a new left-wing political party called Your Party (UK) in 2025, which he currently leads as interim leader. He remains a prominent figure on the British left, known for his unwavering socialist principles and anti-establishment activism. Despite the controversies, Corbyn retains a strong base of support among younger, more radical elements of the UK electorate.

The scale of the problem was also dramatically overstated for political reasons by our opponents inside and outside the party, as well as by much of the media.
